There are many steps to planning a special event for a person or cause you care about. Not only do you have to come up with food ideas, but you often have to find the venue, book the entertainment, invite the guests and much, much more. While planning an event can be overwhelming, there is one step that every host is delighted to do: find (and taste-test) the perfect dinner menu, complete with an amazing dessert.

It has been said that “desserts are the fairy tales of the kitchen—a happily-ever-after to supper.” Here at Katherine’s, we couldn’t agree more! We want every event we cater to have a happy beginning, middle and end, which is why we take special care to create unique, delectable desserts that our customers absolutely love.

Expert Dessert Enthusiasts

Katherine’s has been in the catering business for over 33 years, and we’ve been crafting our own desserts since day one. We believe that you only need two things for a great dessert—the best chefs and the best ingredients. We strive to bring those two things into every event that we cater.

Our baking team is led by Chef Arie Bates, a Michigan native and graduate of the pastry school at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. Arie is a passionate, dedicated chef who’s always on the lookout for a new ingredient and is ready to get creative. If you ask us, he knocks it out of the park every single time!

Fresh, Local Ingredients

Have you ever tasted a piece of fruit fresh off the tree or vine? There’s nothing better than food that’s naturally grown in your home state. As proud Michiganders, we aim to use local ingredients produced by hard-working local farmers in all our desserts. Whether we’re making chocolate mousse, berry cobbler or classic coffee cake, you can bet that our desserts are the best of what the Wolverine state has to offer.

For example, for one of our clients’ 80th birthday parties, we were able to recreate his absolute favorite dessert: Berry Shortcakes! We sourced local seasonal berries from Michigan —sweet strawberries, early blueberries and ripened raspberries. We tossed the jubilee of berries together, added some fresh orange juice and orange zest and a dash of Grand Marnier. Then we prepared a large batch of flaky buttermilk biscuits made with some extra heavy cream to complement the berries and topped the entire dessert with maple/vanilla-laced whipped heavy cream. Everyone was pretty joyful at this outdoor summer party.

We once had the pleasure of crafting a maize and blue dessert for the University of Michigan’s campaign celebration. We served our “Maize ‘n Blue Shooter” starring lemon pound cake, fresh lemon curd, lemon mousse, vanilla bean blueberry compote and whipped cream all piled in a shot glass! We sourced local produce to make our tasty fruit layers, not to mention that the dessert was a big hit.

Ambitious, Creative Treats

Everyone wants their party to be a unique reflection of their own tastes. We love working with our customers to create original treats for their events. We’re not afraid to get creative (with a sprinkle of crazy) in the pursuit of some good eats.

Some of our experiments actually wind up becoming company favorites, like our sea salt espresso brownies. People go a little nuts for them, actually. A bride and groom asked for something special for their dessert table, and boy did we deliver! Fresh butter, eggs, locally milled flour and chunks of Belgian chocolate (not to mention the espresso powder and sea salt) combined beautifully to make a brownie that was simply to die for. These beauties are our most popular dessert!

Customizable Dessert Menus

How do you choose a dessert when everything looks so delicious? Well thankfully, that’s not a problem for our clients, because we offer an assortment of all our dessert options. Our tasty treats can be purchased individually or by the dozen, so you can create a dessert menu specially selected for your event. We’re also happy to provide options for customers with allergies or gluten sensitivities, so everyone has something delectable to eat.
